Craft Story

The Art of Chikankari

Chikankari is a delicate and intricate embroidery style that has graced Indian textiles for over 400 years. Originating in Lucknow, this art form is characterized by its subtle elegance and meticulous handwork.

The Process

Each piece begins with careful pattern design, where motifs inspired by nature—flowers, leaves, and vines—are hand-drawn onto the fabric. Our artisans then bring these designs to life using traditional stitches, including bakhiya, phanda, and murri, each requiring years of practice to perfect.

The embroidery process can take anywhere from several days to weeks, depending on the complexity of the design. Every stitch is placed with intention, creating patterns that are both delicate and durable.

Our Artisans

We partner with skilled artisans in Lucknow who have inherited this craft through generations. By working directly with them, we ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and the preservation of this invaluable art form.
